Great Book April 8, 2007 12 out of 14 found this review helpful
Passed the exam on the first try after primarily preparing from this book. Very well organized...I learned Java while preparing for the exam...The exam is of course not a walk in the park...However, this book helped...Concise, to the point, and perfect flow...There are actually much fewer typos in this book than in the other SCJP exam book that I have...I love the author's style...he has a way of making difficult concepts easy to understand, and yet stay accurate... Will get you through the exam...but also good to just learn Java.
Good idea, but... April 5, 2007 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
I think the idea behind this book is a good, but it contains quite a few "small" errors. I found 4 or so in the first chapter that I read. They continue throughout the book as well. For example, he defines the range of the short data type in a table incorrectly, which may not seem to be a big deal, but a question dealing with it is in the review questions at the end of the chapter. The errors range from typos, to ones like the short (which might cause problems in the exam) to just annoyances (he says "unitary operator" instead of "unary operator" in one place). I wonder how so many problems made it through the technical and editorial review. Again, these may be small issues in any other programming book, but when studying for an exam, it would be nice to know you are getting correct material.
Also, I bought this book because of its smaller size, but it is obvious that the primary audience is beginners, since it is somewhat hard to wade through and pull out the essentials for a java programmer with experience that is simply preparing for the exam.
Excellent book February 3, 2007 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
?This is an excellent book which, you should be using if you are writing the SCJP exam. The codewalk quicklet, exam's eye view and the review questions sections at the end of each chapter should help you remember what you learned in that chapter. If I'd had this book back when I wrote the SCJP exam back in 2001, it would've made my life much easier.
Concise January 5, 2007 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
Concise and beautiful. Books like these are hard to find. It covers the domain beautifully. The author has a unique approach of saying only what is necessary and saying it beautifully.
A very well written book but not completely enough for Java 5 exam December 23, 2006 17 out of 18 found this review helpful
This book is pretty good for a beginner of Java. I usually have this 'fat book phobia' which makes me disinterested to read bulky books. So i generally look for something to teach me all the concepts in a crisp and concise way. This book does exactly that. Most of the Java 5 topics are clearly and nicely explained in simple and easy to understand terms. I know that it takes a lot of experience and skill to write books in such a way. But for anyone who wants to take a java certification and aim to score more than 90% I highly recommend this book PLUS the Kathy sierra's book for Java 5 certification to cover all the topics. Some topics like join() method in Threads, unary operators e.t.c are not covered or do not have enough/correct exam oriented information about.
