Comprehensive and Focused February 20, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This book is the manual for excellence if you are attempting the CCIE R/S. Wendell, Rus and Naren are known for their attention to detail and their willingness -- tenacity would be a better word -- in chasing down accurate and specific facts on any topic. A couple typos? Don't whine about that until you have written a book -- get over it and use the excellent information in here to get the lock on your CCIE. My highest possible recommendation -- this book should be on every Cisco jockey's shelf.
Passed the exam using this book January 19, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I passed the exam reading this book and the ciscopress digital shortcut a day before the exam. The only section I found weak in this book was the section on frame-relay. The other sections were very clear. For the frame-relay section I have used additional material. The book does cover though precisely what you need to know for the exam. I give this book a five star for it does cover completely what it is supposed to cover.
Riddled with typos January 4, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
The book and the CD-ROM practice questions are riddled with typos.
The practice questions on the CD-ROM are incomplete. There are missing and incomplete diagrams. There are missing exhibits (these are usually configuration pieces and output from router show commands). Its kind of hard to answer those questions that reference missing exhibits and diagrams.
Also, many of the questions have incorrect answers and missing explanations. Instead of an explanation you see "Please enter your explanation here."
Taking all of this into account, it is clear this book was rushed to market.
I hope that CiscoPress and the author will do the right thing and fix the CD-ROM practice questions, and offer a patch or an update via Boson. Come on guys!
Also, why did the previous edition of this book have over 500 questions and this one only has 250 or so? Its almost all the same material, just a couple of chapters difference between the two editions. Honestly, 500 isn't even enough. There should be 1000 practice questions at least. You should also integrate the appendix of tables into flash card format and include that on the CD. That would be a REAL memory building tool.
Excellent book December 27, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is an excellent book for the CCIE Ver 3 Routing & Switching exam. I needed Ver 3 for recertification and found the book to be most helpful. Wendell Odom is an excellent author. I've got several of his CCIE books and each and every one of them is excellent.
Great books, I missed the labs December 18, 2007 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
It is a great book for CCIE Routing and Switching, but the CD doesn't came with labs to practice. It is the only thing to this book to be completed.
