Excellent book July 18, 2007 This is one the few books that goes into details of reverse engineering. A lot of the steps described I went thru myself, not using Ollydbg but with IDA Pro which is the perfect tool for this.
Real hard core - not for intermediate June 24, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you want to advance your experience in reverse engineering, this book is for you. It is not easy to understand. The author covers lot of material from Assembly code to .Net which I find it very helpful to understand reverse engineering from old to new language and how the coding evolves for the past 30 years.
Good Introductory Reverse Engineering Book May 5, 2007 This is a good introductory book on reverse engineering. I would say it best suits somebody that has some years of developing experience in high-level languages such as C/C++ or Delphi/Pascal, while also knows something about Assembly language -- and of course with a strong curiosity for any "secrets" under the hood. From time to time I found myself nodding while reading this book.
My work invloves using some software for modeling transportation systems but most of the time the details of the underlying models that software relies on are not well documented. The information in this book helps me quickly learn how to reverse and get the information I want to know. Besides this book is very well written thus very enjoyable to read. In this regard, I would like to say - as an extra bonus I learned a lot from the author's writing ! (Sure, English is not my native lanuage but I have to write a lot technical reports in English for my daily work)
I love this book. Highly recommended!
Excellent April 25, 2007 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to get into Reversing. I was fairly new to the ASM/Reversing scene before this, but this book really propelled me into to. All the prior comments are 100% spot on. Once again, highly recommended.
Excellence in writing April 4, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
'Reversing' is an excellent book for anyone getting into the reverse engineering scene. It requires that the reader have a basic familiarity with assembly, but explains what it's doing insofar as the book uses it. It is well-written, probably more so than any other book of technical nature I've ever read. Punctuation, spelling, grammar, all the little things that can ruin a book no matter how technically correct it is, they're all here. Combine that with a writing style that's almost like a dialog between you and the writer, and we have a book that is a pleasure to read.
The technical aspects of this book are also excellent. He provides numerous code samples, writing his own programs for these purposes when necessary (encryption schemes, for example). I would recommend this book for anyone looking at reverse engineering code for any purposes, whether cracking, porting, deciphering, or anything else.
