5 out of 5 stars Good for studying.   November 29, 2007
0 out of 1 found this review helpful

The A+ Cert. for Dummies book is a great investment for multiple reasons. It's a great book to have to help you along with your studies, and it's a great read while your waiting to take your test. It comes with a full practice test on a CD that is very useful knowing that a practice test online would cost about the same amount of money as this book does. If you are studying for the A+ tests or if you just want to learn more about any specific computer related topic, you should get this book.

2 out of 5 stars The real story   October 29, 2007

I titled this the real story because these are the things you need to know before buying this book. First, yes its 1100 pages; big because of the "improved" A+ update. The problem isn't the size, its the organization. To become A+ certified you have to pass A+ Essentials & one "elective" (IT Technician, Remote Support, or Depot Technician) One would assume that there would be one section dedicated to A+ Essentials, and others for the aforementioned "electives" but there isn't. There are no sections that start off saying "Remote Support" then teach you everything about that particular "elective" etc. Everything is mashed together. If the book was as short as the previous version then this probably wouldn't be a problem for most people. But again its 1100 pages, of technical stuff; why read about technical stuff pertaining to Remote Support when you're studying for Depot Technician. The software is pretty much a joke. It's not adaptive (then again neither is the real exam for now) so it can't really help you learn your strengths & weaknesses. You're just being asked 750+ questions with no interactivity (no test engine at all) so it doesn't help all that much. There's also the quick assessment tests that are nothing more than pdf files that you open and read. They are 2 page files that contain between 5 & 10 questions. The first page has the questions and the second page has the questions with answers. The only reason I gave this book 2 stars is because of the amount of info in it and work that went into it, but its the worst Dummies tech book I've bought; My opinion, wait for the next release or make sure you buy study material for the "electives" you're studying for.

5 out of 5 stars Good read for entry level help desk technicians wanting certification   September 27, 2007

Being a CompTIA A+ Certified Technician myself, I am aware of the formatting and types of questions asked on the test. Because I have help desk technicians reporting to me, it's vital I find a complete resource for them as they progress in their careers.

After looking over the content and material, this is one of the two books I recommend to look over for the exam.

4 out of 5 stars A+, Knowledge we should all have   September 19, 2007
If you are either going for your A+ Certification or need a good reference book on computers and how they are put together, this is it. The cd exam which is included could have been designed a little better but it is "The Test". The book is written so you don't have to read the whole thing to get the information you are looking for. Nicely done.
