1 out of 5 stars Disappointingly Overpriced with DRM that Makes it Worse. Avoid if You Can.   October 24, 2007

I was required to purchase this for my class and am disappointed that my instructor chose this particular software title. Before I explain the quality of the software, let me explain the DRM licensing scheme. For starters, you must be connected to the internet to activate the license. Yes, you must activate the license to use it. Their server then deducts one from the number of activations you have remaining (you get two). When you're done, you can deactivate the license and place the activation back on the server if you choose. If you're unlucky and need to reinstall Windows after an activation, then you've just lost a license activation. If you're in the middle of nowhere without an internet connection and want to get some practice in, too bad, you won't be able to use the software that you paid for.

Now on to the software itself. You can install virtual switches, routers, and hosts. Double clicking on any of them brings up a command prompt that allows you to configure the device. The hosts are a joke. Double clicking a host brings up an MS-DOS command prompt that only allows you to PING other machines. Apparently TRACERT, IPCONFIG, ROUTE, and ARP commands don't exist to the author. The stability of the software is questionable as I've had it crash on me twice. There is also a bug that prevents me from getting out of the connection mode.

Avoid this software if you can. I wish my teacher had allowed us to use something else as I am really disappointed with this simultor.

5 out of 5 stars The book and router simulator are outstanding tools for learning how to use Cisco hardware and key networking concepts.   October 9, 2007

I recently purchased this product and for the price, you cannot beat it. What struck me was the ease of use and the interface. You can load networks already connected or create your own. They even have graphical representations of the devices. The Titanium's help section is extensive and the labs are easy to navigate through. You have a tree like structure that lists all of them on the left side and you go through this program sequentially or randomly, wherever you want. To configure a network you bring up a console screen and the actual experience of entering commands and viewing output is just like working with real hardware. I have a couple routers and as I went through the program I verified the accuracy of the program and it is pretty darn close! However, there is a limited amount of commands you can use but it is enough to get through all the labs. If you do not have a lot of money but want to get real-life, hands-on experience, I would highly recommend this product.

2 out of 5 stars not there yet   April 5, 2007

"just missing a hell of a lot, definitely missing labs, as in standard lab 8.11 "bringing it all together" not there, i just get a clock flashing next to my cursor, and some of the labs aren't complete. another problem, i make vlan ip entries on a 3550 sw or 2950A switch and it appears on the same vlan on the 2950B switch. i correct the mistake "i must have made" and the correction appears on the other sw. so they have a pointer in their program that just points to swithes but not to a or b or c sw. a great many of the labs are filled with description, hostname, password, ping, sh int, etc. for this sw and that sw and the router, each a seperate lab.

initialy a left click opens a lab page but if your menu, like mine, doesn't immediately respond to a left click of your mouse, instead of going "i'll left click untill i die," right click and choose "open link in new window." and with just one click it opens the new page.

as my review is the first one, where are the usual first 4 reveiws with 5 stars. i've just assumed that was standard procedure. that said, this is the best practice software on networking i've seen. so what ever.
