Product Description The Linksys Wireless-G Internet Home Monitoring Camera sends live video through the Internet to a web browser anywhere in the world! This compact, self-contained unit lets you keep track of your home, your kids, your workplace - whatever's important to you.Unlike standard "web cams" that require an attached PC, the Internet Home Monitoring Camera contains its own web server, so it can connect directly to a network, either over Wireless-G (802.11g) networking, or over 10/100 Ethernet cable. Choose either MPEG-4 or Motion JPEG video compression for a high-quality, high-framerate, up to 640x480 video stream. The Compact Internet Home Monitoring Camera's unique form-factor and wireless connectivity allows you to mount it on a wall nearly anywhere, or slip it into its included stand for desktop use. Once it's connected to your home network, you can "see what it sees" from any PC in the house, while the video stream is secured from the outside world, hidden behind your Router. You can also turn on Security Mode, which tells the camera to send a message with a short video attached to up to three email addresses whenever it detects motion in its field of view. You can then log onto the live video stream if the situation warrants. The included Viewer & Recorder utility lets you record the audio/video stream to your local hard drive, "live" or on a predetermined schedule.also turn on Security Mode, which tells the camera to send a message with a short video attached to up to three email addresses whenever it detects motion in its field of view. Fails after 3 days, then needs physical reset December 2, 2008 I was really happy with this camera. It is a good size, nice design, easy to setup.
But, then after leaving it plugged into the network and unattended for a few days, it shut off. It does not like to be powered up for more than a couple of days, and the only way to reset it is to unplug the power, and plug it back in again.
I have tried wired and wireless connections, but no luck.
It's not worth your money unless you don't mind resetting it's power every day or so.
Great home monitoring wireless camera! November 24, 2008 Works like a charm. if you know how to set up a router, adding this wireless camera to your home network is a piece of cake. Was pleasantly surprised at how well it works. My wife and I can watch our new puppy from work to make sure she's ok. You can watch video from any web browser. However, you can only heard audio when using Internet Explorer -- that leaves all Mac users like me without the audio functionality. The camera utility software seems pretty good, but there is only a PC version. I find it incredible that I can watch the video on my iPhone. Would've rated this 5 stars if it weren't for the limited functionality for non-PC users.
Disappointing Webcam November 20, 2008 It has lots of features but it doesn't work very well. Trying to add it to my existing wireless network didn't work and it took me a while to figure out a way around it. The application that comes with it is really the only way to view the video - it crashes firefox. I would really rather the device could be managed and accessed by a standard web browser. The range is very limited. I wanted it in my garage but 40 feet and a wall were more than it can handle. The video quality isn't all that good. It's hard to recognize people at any distance and once the sun starts down, you can't get a useful image. Cars going by outside are usually blured beyond recognition. It's a good learning experience for not too much money and fun in the livingroom, but if I really need to put a camera in my garage, I'll have to get something else.
Easy to use November 19, 2008 Purchased the Linksys WVC54GCA a few days ago to be able to monitor the dogs/dogsitter when we travel. I followed the installation instructions very carefully and it was extremely easy to install and worked flawlessly. The picture quality over the internet is very good and bright. I am able to access it with any of the browsers that I use (internet explorer, Firefox and safari (IPOD touch)). It was so easy to install and works so well that I plan to add a second camera. Highly recommend this product.
good camera, setup is confusing November 15, 2008 The picture is good, but it bogs down a wireless router a bit. Also instructions for setup could be better. As other reviewers have said, it is not plug and play!! After reading the instructions and piecing together other reviewers comments and getting help from the TZO site I got it to work. Here is the overall process of what you need to do...
First: Follow the instructions that Linksys provides to install the camera and setup a static IP address for it. Do not skip the step about setting up a static IP address! At this point your camera should be working within your home network.
Second: Set up port forwarding on your router - this will send the images from your camera over the internet. Without this step you can only view images from your camera on the same network (i.e. without this you would only be able to view camera images inside your house while you are home). Note that the camera's default setting is normally to use port 80 but it can use port 1024 instead. This sounds more complicated than it really is, just know that many cable companies etc turn off port 80 unless you're a business user and pay extra for it. ** Step 1: Find out if Port 80 is available for you to use -- Download the PortDetective application from portdetective.com. Then run the application and see if port 80 is shut off -- if it is then you can just change to port 1024. (If Linksys had done this right they would have automated this process with their installation software) ** Step 2: Go to the TZO website http://linksys.tzo.com and follow the instructions for setting up your camera to work with their website. Linksys gives you 1 year free of this service. Here is a link to the step by step tutorial http://www.tzo.com/MainPageSupport/HowToPage/LinksysHomeMonitoringCameraTutorial.html If they change the link then just go on the TZO site and click on support and then find the link for Linksys wireless cameras. ** Step 3 (only for people like me who can't use port 80): Change the port that the camera uses to 1024. You do this in the camera's setup software. Then whenever you want to watch the camera on the internet you use the TZO site but add :1024 after the .com they give you, i.e. http://john12345.mylinksyscamera.com:1024
If you follow the above instructions then your camera should work. Good luck!
