 Time consuming November 19, 2008
Living in a 3-story house has inherent problems for an efficient Wi-Fi hotspot. Hawking has a solid reputaion with its antennas and generally with its product line therefore after reading the reviews here I purchased this range extender. The instructions were easy to follow yet I encountered different installation problems throughout several attempts with the setup wizard. Over the course of 2 weeks of calling the tech support number listed in the provided Quick Guide and getting a busy signal, I located a working number on the Hawking web site. Of course I was connected to a call center in India. Usually, with a little patience, the language barrier can be overcome but the technician I had required me having her repeat everything at least once and often twice or more. After 90 minutes of intence configuration she got me running. Each of my 4 PCs recieved "IP conflict" errors upon starting which was resolved with Windows "Repair" function. Unfortunately, this was required each and every time a computer was started. Also, if the router was restarted I had to go through a complete reset of the Hawking extender. This became tedious and the daily time consumtion to keep it working quickly became far more trouble than the signal increase benefits. As the refund window with Amazon approached it was an easy decision to pack it up and return the product.

I read many reviews on the HWREg1 before I made my purchase. Set-up was very easy and it took my wireless signal from fair to excellent. A note on set-up: let your router assign the IP address - it makes accessing the web page access much easier (be sure to note the assigned IP address and then don't use the web address shown in the manual). A good buy from Amazon and they delivered right on time as promised. Highly recommended!
I found out why these don't always work September 15, 2008

I purchased two of these, and wasted two days trying to figure out why they worked sometimes and wouldn't work the rest of the time. I finally figured out that the very small switching power supply doesn't work properly with the extender. If you plug the power supply into the extender BEFORE you plug the power into a wall outlet it will NOT work. If you plug the power supply into the wall outlet first, and then into the extender it will work fine. Even though it will work that way, anytime you lose power it will not work again until you disconnect and reconnect the power cord at the extender. I picked up two 12 VDC power supplies at a thrift shop for $2 each, and now I'm back in business. It does work well as a repeater.
After spending hours on the phone with people in India, I called Hawking sales, and got them to transfer me to someone in Engineering. Hopefully they'll soon package the extender with a power supply that works.

I was looking for a way to extent my wireless network to my neighbor's house and this unit did the trick. Setup was a snap. Simply plug-in the unit and insert the included setup CD. Answer a few configuration questions and place the unit in the desired location and you're ready to go. My neighbor's computer went from having no signal to a strong four bar signal.
Additionally, all the dead spots in my house are now gone, allowing us to move computers anywhere we want. The unit also extended our wireless signal to my detached garage, allowing me to stream music to my laptop, whereas previously I kept losing the signal. The kids like it because now they can sit outside and play PSP and Nintendo DS games online.

Spent a few hours setting this up, including time spent with their tech support folks. I returned it as I saw that it made no difference at all in wireless reception in my home.
