5 out of 5 stars Best gift ever   December 4, 2008
I just got mine this week, and I have not been able to put it down.
I love how the screen isn't a glowing screen, it actually looks like ink on paper. You can buy books in an instant, even get the first chapter free, to see if you'll like the book! You can even go on the internet, though, I still am finding this really quirky.
I have a teeny complaint, and that is that the page buttons are very sensitive. If you're reading sometimes you'll accidentally hit one of them and then have to re-find your place. It's quite easy, but a bit of a pain.
I have never received such a great gift. It's like having a library at your disposal! There are so many books to already choose from, and more coming all the time.
I highly suggest to anyone to buy the kindle book, or even paper book:
The Complete User's Guide to the Amazing Amazon Kindle -by Stephen Windwalker.
Yes it's a user's manual, but it's more! It helps walk you through all the tough stuff, and even some of the stuff not explained in the manual.

5 out of 5 stars The Amazing Kindle   December 4, 2008

Since the Kindle arrived, I have enjoyed reading books available within 3 seconds from the kindle store. No more trying to find bookcase space for books. Convenient when I travel. Loved the "look up feature" . I have recommended the kindle to friends and family.

pages turn accidently and the lookup in dictionary is a little cumbersome, but those are minor. Overall this is a great little device.

5 out of 5 stars Never leave home without it   December 4, 2008

I have had my Kindle for over a month now. Fortunately my finance ordered it a few days before Oprah announced it as her favorite thing so it came in time for my birthday.

I had read through many of the reviews, weighing the good and the bad before I had even seen one. Most of the complaints are valid. There is a flash and a bit of delay when turning the page. It is a little awkward at first until you figure out how to hold the Kindle without accidentally pressing the next page button. But those are minor flaws compared to what it can do!

I am not a lazy person by any means but I love that I don't have to get out of bed and go downstairs (especially now that's it's below freezing out) to get my paper. I wake up, turn on my Kindle, and my New York Times downloads. And it is so easy to search for a keyword if I am looking for a particular article but I can't remember which issue it was in! I can preview a book to see if I even want to read it, without having to go to a bookstore or library.

I no longer have to carry around a dictionary. The pocket ones were always too simple and it was ridiculous to even consider bringing along anything larger. I always carry a book in my bag, almost anywhere I go. I read while waiting in long lines, I read at the movie theater before the movie starts, I read at work when I have some down time. And I am usually reading two or three books at a time. And now they are compactly stored in my Kindle!

I admit I am a bit of a technogeek but I am also a bibliophile. I love the feel of books, I love making notes in the margins, underlining important phrases, and most of all, I love sharing my books with other people, which you cannot really do on the Kindle. So I am keeping all of my books, I still go to the library on a biweekly basis and I still continue to buy more books, to my future husband's dismay. (There is no more room for bookshelves!) But the Kindle is my PORTABLE book reader. I can take it with me anywhere. I can take along as many books as I like when I travel, without having to pack an extra suitcase. I personally don't think it will replace books for those of us who love them and are obsessed with them. But it is a great piece of technology for those of us who love to read and welcome any medium that allows it.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!   December 4, 2008

HOW IRONIC THAT I PURCHASED A KINDLE AND HAVE NO WORDS TO DESCRIBE IT!
THE KINDLE IS REVOLUTIONARY! IT COINCIDES WITH THE RETURN OF READING BOOKS AND THE QUEST FOR KNOWLEDGE IN OUR COUNTRY.
I SEE THE KINDLE AS THE FIRST CELL PHONE. VERY SOON CHILDREN WILL NO LONGER HAVE TO CARRY BACKPACKS CAUSING GREAT DISCOMFORT. WITH THE ADDED MEMORY A KINDLE CAN CONCEIVABLY TAKE A CHILD FROM KINDERGARTEN THROUGH COLLEGE BY SIMPLY DOWNLOADING ALL REQUIRED READING MATERIAL AT A FRACTION OF THE CURRENT COSTS.
I CARRY MY KINDLE WHEREVER I GO. WHY? SO I CAN SAY, "HAVE YOU SEEN THE KINDLE?" AND THEN I FORWARD THAT PERSON TO AMAZON.COM. I'M LOOKING FOR STOCK IN THE COMPANY, AT THIS POINT.
ENOUGH SAID, THE KINDLE WILL CHANGE THE WAY THE AVID READER READS AND TURN A NON-READER INTO AN AVID READER, BECAUSE AS ONE YOUNG MAN PUT IT, WHOM I SHOWED MY KINDLE TO, "I LIKE IT AND I WOULD READ MORE, BECAUSE IT IS INTERACTIVE READING."
THANK YOU MR. BEZOS!

DYANE J.
