Enjoyable, well layed out October 2, 2008 I plan to take a CCNA course next semester at the local community college and bought this book due to its good reviews. I have had exposure to these technologies throughout some courses that I have been currently taking so the subject matter was not new, but I did learn additional things. The book explains concepts in a way that is easy to understand. Highly recommended!
Very well written technical guide September 13, 2008 I read both of these books from front to back, while doing doing hands on practicing with Cisco gear. One thing I liked about these books is that I feel it gives you more than what you need to pass the exam, rather than the bare minimum. I did learn a good amount from reading these books, and I passed my CCNA the first time I took it earlier this week.
In order to pass the exam, I would recommend that you get hands on experience with Cisco routers and switches if possible. For those that don't have multiple routers at their disposal, GNS3 is a useful, free tool that allows you to test virtualized routers.
I've heard that the DVD that comes with the book has a good testing engine, although I didn't try it. I've been using the Transcenders practice exams for sometime, and I find them good because they seem harder than the actual exams.
I would definitely recommend these books. Good luck to you in your studies.
CiscoPress... August 4, 2008 Just amazing... Both books, and the Video-Class... But it's not news, if we talking about CiscoPress, and Wendell Odom work.
Certainly will help me to get my CCNA.
ccna review August 1, 2008 The book is excellent although I had to return the set due to the fact that the first book's cd was blank.
Technically accurate July 18, 2008 Most advantages of those 2 books (cheap, comprehensive, additional materials) have been mentioned by other reviewers and I agree. I am not sure if it covers the exam topics, since I haven't taken the test (and even if I had, we are not supposed to talk about what is on the exam :-). What I really like about this author is the technical accuracy of every single sentence. I haven't read absolutely every page, but read enough of it and could not find any mistake (and I am a really bad person when I read a book :-). Besides accuracy and in depth analysis of the topics, this book at some points can substitute not only classroom training, but also some experience operating real networks (e.g. the part that talks about physical circuit clock rate and synchronization in fundamentals of WANs). If you trust this author, you will learn a lot of useful things, more that just "what is the command to do this and that?". Yes, that's it. This book is generally useful, even for those that already know most of the stuff. Good job! Oh, almost forgot to mention how much I enjoyed the Flintstones Network story (if you read it after you have understood the rest of the material, you will appreciate more how much funny it is :-)
