Definitely for the Ebay beginner November 29, 2008 This product is probably great for the eBay startup. It's just that I already have a few months under my belt and I was hoping for help in getting to the next level. It is definitely worth the price.
A decent resource for beginning ebayers. Too many basics for the pros. November 26, 2008 I use Nolo books and CDs as a resource for other things, so I was looking forward to this book.
I've sold on eBay since 1999, never a power seller, but I probably average 10 items a month (some months nothing, other months 40 or more items).
I don't consider it a business, just something I do after work to bring in some extra cash. Recently though, my day job is a bit fragile (who's isn't!), so I've been researching the possibility of utilizing eBay as a 'real' job.
I wanted a book that would explore the aspects of taxes and record keeping involved in essentially owning a small business. I'm not a numbers person, so this part of the equation would be my weak link.
Usually Nolo books include forms and other documentation in the CD that help keep me on track and focused on the task at hand. This book's CD is simply a copy of all the text in the book. While marginally nice to have (load it in the laptop and take it with me), it doesn't offer any appreciable benefit over the print copy.
I typically graze Nolo books - not reading all the way through, but just grabbing the parts I need to complete a job. Unfortunately, this book isn't really laid out in a way that makes grazing easy.
Instead of putting all the beginner basics in the first chapter or two, they are sprinkled throughout the book. So, reading up on tax law requires me to wade through information that even the newest ebayer will already know.
Also included is a multitude of information on what and where to purchase product for sale. I already know what I'm selling - and I believe most profitable ebayers are already experts at a particular field and know where to purchase product before they dive in deeper.
For ebayers who only know that they want to sell SOMETHING, this section of the book is useful. It would have been extremely helpful to everyone if they had been able to access and utilize statistics from eBay in regards to top selling categories and products. Also helpful would be information on top searches that produce the least results, showing that these items are in high demand and low supply - making for great selling opportunity.
This book tries to be all things to all people. Unfortunately, the target audience will not want all things. The typical audience will probably be longtime eBay users who are ready to step it up a notch. For those users, about half the contents is very helpful.
This should have been two books. Book 1 would be eBay for Beginners. Book 2 would be eBay Business Start-up Kit for current eBay users. Both books would have fit reader needs effectively. Even if they had kept all this information in a single volume, compartmentalizing the 'beginner' information at the front of the book, and the 'advanced' information at the back would have helped.
I had to wade through too much fluff to get to the meat. Okay for a novel, not good for a how-to resource.
Not a bad resource but... November 21, 2008 This book seems to be a good resource for anyone interested in learning more about selling on ebay. I'm not sure why though, but I don't feel very drawn into the book and have been putting off reviewing it as a result. But I realized that this in itself is my review; my impressions of what I think of it. From what I read, I think it does a good job covering the basics, much of which was new to me, but I'm just left a little under whelmed. I'm not all that into ebay, so maybe it's just not my bag and I misjudged getting it, don't know, but there it is all the same.
Ebay again.... November 19, 2008 Like many of the other reviewers, I've bought and sold on Ebay for years as a hobby, unaware of how complicated running a full-on Ebay business would be. This book goes over all the Ebay basics in addition to guidance in starting a real Ebay business. The accompanying CD is invaluable for the printable forms but some of the Ebay information (rates) is out of date.
Very useful and easy to follow October 29, 2008 This book provides all the information you need to start a business on ebay. I especially liked the chapter on "Business Entities: What Kind of Business Your eBay Business should be?" which discusses LLC and Corporation. This is a good all-round reference guide that also includes fill-in forms that you can use for your new business.
