This exam guide is JUST RIGHT July 11, 2000 Ever bought study guides or "Unleashed" type books and found them to just meander through topics, with lots of pages wasted on topics you know that YOU shouldn't be wasting your time on? Well, I have seen or bought far too many of them before buying this one from Amazon.com. Every page counted, and no space was wasted. I was extremely pleased with it's excellent organization, readability, balance, and, of course, content. Scored an 833, and the questions I missed were covered in the book -- I just, uh, forgot them. There are a few small errors in the book, but when you start spotting them, you'll know you're getting ready to pass an exam. In addition to preparing me for the certification exam, troubleshooting information contained in the book has saved my 11-person IT staff hundreds of hours administrating an NT network with 400 workstations. If there's any question in your mind as to which book to buy first to pass the NT Server exam, consider it answered. Spend any extra money on Exam Cram, and you WILL be a Microsoft Certified Professional. Good luck!
a completely irresponsible publication February 12, 2000 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
You'd expect a book that sells itself specifically as an exam prep book to present information accurately. Unfortunately, this book is so full of inaccuracies and missing information that it's hard to imagine anyone successfully passing the exam based on the information in this book. One example: chapter 2 mentions hashing, and explains that it's used on FAT partitions, but doesn't describe the hashing algorithm. In the chapter summary, they say to expect a couple of hashing questions on the exam. In the review questions, they ask you to hash five file names, and when you turn to the answers in the back of the book, ALL FIVE are done wrong! A breathtaking example of ineptitude! On and on it rambles, with useless diagrams, missing information, skipping over important concepts and emphasizing unimportant ones. On the plus side, it's well written, and easy to follow. This is a book that cries for a proof-reader.
Lots of broken links in the "Interactive Study Section" November 3, 1999 There is an Interactive Self Study Section which comes with the CD-ROM. The idea is good but it is not "Interactive" at all. You suppose to click a correct answer from the question and it will link you to the next one. However, I find it hard to believe that many times, I had been linked to some pages that have nothing to do with the questions itself at all. They should check it before published that book. I paid good money for a "good book", not a "lost in space" game.
Hits most topics tested. June 24, 1999 This book does a good job of hitting most of the tested topics. However, like the Sybex guide, some objectives lack depth.Questions at end of chapters are not exam like, but do a good job of testing your understanding of each chapter. A good guide to estimate if your studying is working. Toss the CD... and use the net to get sample tests. Would buy it again. Similar to the Sybex study guide. (I've read both).
The best of all self-ed books I have read. February 17, 1999 This book is written in a detail that makes it easier to understand the topic. Much better than other publishers' books. Fewer errors. I passed the test on the first attempt using this book.
