Product Description The only book dedicated Sniffer, a powerful tool created for real-time enterprise network fault diagnosis and performance management. Sniffer Network Optimization and Troubleshooting Handbook introduces the reader to the vast functionality of the suite of Sniffer Solutions from Network Associates but ultimately focuses on the affordable and most widely used Sniffer Product - Sniffer Pro LAN Network Analyzer. This book will begin with the basic features of Sniffer Pro LAN and then move the reader through the impressive tips and tools available for gathering data, analyzing, troubleshooting, resolving and securing problems on their network. In today's day and age a company is judged by the quality of it is network. To ensure sustained network performance and to avoid costly network downtime, network administrators need to be proficient with advanced networking monitoring and troubleshooting solutions, like Sniffer, to be able to detect, observe, and resolve network problems before these problems impact users or customers. Sniffer from Network Associates is a suite of tools including Sniffer Portable Analysis Suite, Sniffer Distributed Analysis Suite, Sniffer Reporting, Sniffer Optical, and Sniffer Wireless. With a clear market leadership, Sniffer Solutions are employed in over 80% of the enterprise networks of the Fortune 100. Sniffer has also received wide industry acclaim from the experts and its everyday users. In 2000 Sniffer was named one of the 10 most computer products of the decade by Network Computing Magazine. It also received the "Editor's Choice" award from PC Magazine during the second quarter of 2001. Over 60,000 individuals have taken advantage of the educational services offered by Sniffer Technologies - aptly named Sniffer University. Coupled with the introduction of the Sniffer Certified Professional Program (SCPP) as a replacement for the popular CNX (Certified Network Expert) certification, an aptitude with Sniffer Solutions is a "must-have" for system administrators.
Only book to offer comprehensive coverage of Sniffer Pro LAN. Supplemental study materials for the SCPP certification track. As of April 2001, the CNX certifications track became inactive. Current CNXs looking to update their certifications to the new SCPP track are going to need to bring themselves up to speed on the new offerings from the Sniffer family of products before desertification. Up to the Minute Web-based Support. Once the reader understands the concepts of network hardware, configuration, and implementation, they can receive up-to-the minute links, white papers, and analysis for one year at solutions@syngress.com.

Awesome Reference July 10, 2003 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am a Network Engineer with about 6 years experience in networking and systems. This book is really cool. I have worked on so many networks that needed to be repaired and I wish I had this book years ago when I started learning. This book will not fail you. You will learn how to use the Sniffer, Troubleshoot with it, analyze with it, and best yet, you learn how to find problems in networks and this book tells you how to fix or redesign based on what the problem is. This is one of the better troubleshooting books I have seen. I also like the fact that the authors all work for fortune 500 companies, are certified as Sniffer Experts and CCIE level, how can you go wrong with this book? Hope this helps you as this book has helped me.
Great book to carry with your Sniffer May 20, 2003 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I'll keep it short. Thought that as an Sniffer University Instructor this book would not add much for me, but reading the book i found out that is really a good book to have in your neigborhood while working with the Sniffer. It just covers all aspects of the software and many things more that will help you on the way using the Sniffer to troubleshoot or monitor your network.
Excellent reference, great info on filters, triggers, alarms April 30, 2003 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is an excellent book. The chapters on analyzing network issues and reporting are very good. I also liked the chapters on triggers and alarms. The coverage of troubleshooting is solid--three separate chapters, each full of good info and tips.
Concise, detailed book with good examples April 29, 2003 I have been using this book on the job for a couple of months now, and it has greatly helped me take advantage of the most powerful Sniffer features. The authors do a great job of explaining how everything works and then showing you with real examples from a production network. This makes it much easier to apply the knowledge to your own network. The guy from Canada who slammed the book and complained that the authors aren't Sniffer certified must not have read the the page where it says the Technial Editor and lead authors are both SCE/SCPs.
