Product Description

A fresh perspective on planning, designing, implementing, and migrating to a Windows Server 2003 environment. Rand Morimoto and his co-authors began writing this book using their experience from several very large client implementations, some having more than 100 servers in production. On a daily basis, as this book was in production, they had clients with thousands of users taking advantage of the Windows Server 2003 security, scalability, performance, and reliability functions months before the product release. Because of that unique experience, the authors of this book were able to compile the best practices, installation and migration tips and tricks, performance optimization techniques, configuration tuning, and server management techniques for the readers of this book. Rather than revising from previously published chapters in the Windows Server 2000 Unleashed book, this book was written completely from scratch with the belief that this approach would incorporate the true recommendations from the author team for best practices, tips and tricks to get the most out of Windows Server 2003 networking environment.

5 out of 5 stars A reference for W2003 Server   April 10, 2008
The book contains an excellent description of the Windows 2003 Server. It presentes principles and their implementation and thus constitutes a reference handbook for system administrator and technical architect.

No problems. Book arrived quickly and in excellent condition. Considering this is a huge book, that is not a trivial matter.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding! Best Windows 2003 Book on the Market!!!   July 10, 2005

I've bought 4 other books on Windows 2003 to help me with our migration to Active Directory and have been disappointed with the real world experience in all of the other books. This was the first book that had tips and tricks based on real world guidance. I was amazed that the book covered Service Pack 1 being that SP1 just came out a couple months ago. Was VERY helpful as we struggled with our migration process over the past couple months, and after I bought this book last month, we were able to get a clear handle on our implementation of Windows 2003! Outstanding book, I highly recommend it!!!

2 out of 5 stars BORING, and constant repetition throughout   July 8, 2005

I bought this book hoping to get clear, technical know-how from its authors. These other reviewers here helped to solidify my purchase. What a huge mistake. Chapter 1 thru 6 are CONSTANT repeating of the same points, over and over. I swear, chapter 2 is like chapter 1, as are the next few chapters. How many times do I need to be told about "transitive properties between forests, and compatibility with Windows NT and 2000... "? I kid you not, many many pages are repetitive. Chapters are repetitive. Did the proof reader not compare chapters between the various authors and red-line? It's as if they did not compare amongst each other, if indeed that's how the book got compiled.

Ok... Worse: I think this book is for the human administrative guy who needs to learn some concepts so that he does not appear like a complete idiot when speaking with Network gurus in the coffee lounge. This book is like trying to help people who know little about Networking to make a plan on how to migrate and create policies that should be enforced, etc. I feel like I'm in a mixed class of Psyche 101 and Business Relations 202 when reading this.

I have not yet read past chapter 6 but I have definitely skimmed ahead to see of the content seems any deeper and I'm disappointed. Are there many scanned images of the Windows 2003 Server screens? No. Very few.

To me, this is not a book for people who want to know the ins & outs of how to make the OS fly like lightning and all the tips & tricks one comes to expect for a book of this size.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource with clear instructions   June 29, 2005

Admins for the Windows 2003 environment are faced with a daunting task: Security in an inherently insecure world. This book is an excellent resource, with instructions that are clear and easy to follow. There is a basic knowledge assumed--this is not a book for beginners--but for the professional, this book is a literally a job saver. Included is information on Group Policy Management Console, Timewarp Client, Security Configuration Wizard and essential protocols. Well worth the investment.
