Product Description A guide to the internet provider America Online, including information on e-mail, web surfing, chat rooms. The book is accompanied by a CD-ROM containing AOL software and free trial online hours. Fourth revised edition.
Amazon.com Review America Online connects millions of people worldwide to each other and to the World Wide Web. AOL is easy to set up, fun to use, and affordable, making it an excellent connectivity choice. America Online for Dummies shows you how to get online with AOL and how to get the most enjoyment and productivity from it. Author John Kaufeld assumes little more than readers' elementary familiarity with their operating systems--how to start programs and the like. From that base, he explains how to install the AOL software (he covers AOL 4.0) and get connected for the first time. Then he guides you through the social and informational resources on AOL and the Internet, showing you how to search for information, participate in chats, locate items for sale, and play games. Readers find out how to behave politely online and protect themselves from electronic nebbishes too. America Online for Dummies focuses almost exclusively on AOL software for Windows--there's little mention of the Macintosh here, which is unfortunate for those getting online for the first time with AOL and an iMac. Regardless, the copious information on content--the bulk of this book--applies to Mac and Windows users alike. --David Wall

Redundant Title September 10, 2003 0 out of 6 found this review helpful
I believe the title of this book, "America Online for Dummies," is redundant. They should just called it "America Online" since the "for dummies" part is already implied. Only dummies use AOL, so the title of this book would be like saying "Dentistry for Dentists."
More Helpful Than I thought Steve Case Could be.. October 1, 2000 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
After several years on AOL, I have come to realize that they do not make anything simple or easy. I thought I knew on the in's and out's of shortcuts and tricks on AOL but I was mistaken. The authors did a great job of compiling every question members have ever asked and answers that actually explain themselves. Rather than simply telling the reader this is how to achieve this goal, they walk you through each process. I also have the quick reference for work and I wish I had about forty copies for each of our salesmen who all seem to be computer illiterate. lol
Easy to follow...easy to read April 28, 2000 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Basic and fun to read. Lots of good info to make anyone an AOL expert. From the novice to the expert. Plenty of info on getting started and learning to use the different applications on the program. A real winner!
It was the best reference book about AOL that I have read September 2, 1999 I was completely new to the whole AOL experience when I purchased this book. I read it cover to cover in two days. It was very easy to comprehend and I loved the way John Kaufeld added humor throughout the whole book. I refer to it on several occasions and usually find something new to experience that I missed before. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is starting out on AOL who needs simple but complete guidance.
It was GREAT!! August 14, 1998 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
John Kaufeld is the best computer author I've ever read. His book was knowedgable and informative. The best thing about his books is that he updates the book every time new AOL software is released, so I can ALWAYS read the latest stuff. I spend a HUGE amount of time on AOL, and I even learned some stuff I'd never known before! I would also reccomend his Online Games book, also in the "--for dummies" series.
